Configuring Policies in Automated Underwriting

Once you've created or opened an Automated Underwriting Profile, you can configure specific underwriting policies that determine how applications are evaluated based on preset rules and thresholds.

This section will guide you through the Policies tab within a selected profile and explain how to customize the behavior of each policy.

🗂️ Policies Tab Overview

In the Policies tab of an underwriting profile, you'll see a list of individual policies displayed in rows. Each row contains several configuration columns:

Column Details

Column Name

Description

Status

A toggle switch (slider) to enable or disable the policy. Only active policies are evaluated during underwriting.

Expiration Day(s)

Enter the number of days the result of the policy remains valid. You can type a number directly or use the + and - buttons to adjust the value.

Category

Displays the category of the policy (e.g., Financial, Background, Documentation). This is system-defined and cannot be edited.

Policy

The name of the policy, such as “Credit Score Check” or “Employment Verification.” This is also system-defined.

Description

A brief explanation of the policy’s purpose. This is automatically populated based on the selected policy.

Config

This is the main configuration area, where you define how the policy behaves. Options may include:
- Result Type (e.g., Passed, Failed, Conditional) via dropdown.
- State-specific conditions (e.g., only apply in certain U.S. states).
- Percentage thresholds (e.g., Debt-to-Income ratio < 35%).
- Ranges using From and To fields.
- Other custom options depending on the policy logic.

🛠 How to Configure a Policy

  1. Go to the Policies tab in your selected UW Profile.

  2. Locate the policy you want to configure.

  3. Use the Status slider to activate or deactivate the policy.

  4. Set the Expiration Day(s) value if needed.

  5. Review the Category, Policy, and Description (read-only).

  6. In the Config column, define the expected results and thresholds using the dropdowns and fields provided.

    • Choose how the policy should behave when the rule is met (e.g., Mark as “Passed” if the applicant's credit score is above 680).

    • Adjust range fields or apply filters based on geography, percentage, etc.

Tips for Effective Configuration

  • Only activate relevant policies to keep performance optimized and reduce confusion.

  • Expiration Day(s) ensures that outdated checks don’t block approvals—use this to fine-tune re-verification timelines.

  • Use the Config options to customize logic per state, role, or numerical range.
